Jonathan Sumption (Lord Sumption) began his career as a history fellow of Magdalen College Oxford before turning to law in his late twenties. He practised at the bar in commercial and public law from 1977, was appointed QC in 1986 and a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2012, one of only five people to have been appointed to the highest court directly from the bar. After his retirement in 2018, he delivered the BBC Reith Lectures on the theme of Law and the Decline of Politics and is today a regular commentator on legal and constitutional matters. Jonathan Sumption’s two collections of essays, Law in a Time of Crisis (2023) and Challenges of Democracy (2025) are published by Profile Books. He is also the author of a number of works of history, including a five-volume history of the Hundred Years War (Faber & Faber), volume III of that series was awarded the Wolfson History Prize in 2010.
